“Oh, me? I mostly fight crime.” She crossed her arms in order to get a better position from which to stare defiantly. “I also occasionally commit crime, but generally speaking that’s done in the name of fighting other crime which has already been committed by others and, you might say, is of a higher criminal magnitude than the crimes committed by myself in the process of fighting aforesaid other crime.”
“Generally speaking,” Miles repeated, in the sort of heavily doubtful tone of voice which is about the audible equivalent of lead.
“Well, most of the time,” she amended.
There was a brief pause.
“Fine. Some of the time.”

This says more about Darian (or Darien. the author isn’t entirely sure; this leads to bad things) than any character sheet could, really. And also my approach to Chaotic Good characters in general. This multiverse needs more con-man heroes by rule of Author Appeal Fiat.

The Red Mountain basically began operating when a man named Sean located, more or less by accident, a sort of ‘point of least resistance’ technique capable of opening doors to a tremendous variety of places throughout the Multiverse. Being commercially minded, he proceeded to use it not for any purposes reasonably describable as ‘nefarious’, but rather to found a restaurant in a space station above the surface of Sigeki.

…and also on the planet itself. And in a number of different locations throughout the multiverse, although it didn’t reach its full range of entry points until recently.

The actual mechanics are a bit fuzzy and generally wind up amounting to ‘if it helps the plot or the author wants people there they are’. It appears that by default the exit will be set for any particular person to the entrance last used, although if said person knows of another exit location it’s possible to override this default setting. This actually helps a reasonable amount, I’d imagine, in the case of any particular Prime Directive issue; if you don’t know where else you can go it just seems like an ordinary location in space-time with a very odd clientele and some equally odd dinner options.

As with most such cases of the Inn Between the Worlds trope, it’s a bit of a strictly demilitarized zone; lots of Enemy Mine negotiations and just general conversation if heroes and villains who know eachother wind up there. It doesn’t appear to have any way of actively removing weapons from your person, but… well… Sean himself eventually passed down ownership/proprietorship to Lowen Tremearne (and his right-hand woman is Serenade Hikaru, a highly accomplished hired gun, to say nothing of anyone else working there, which have included a number of Crescent Moon Division agents). So if an army decided to ambush the Red Mountain he’d manage to throw them out forcefully, while making sarcastic comments at any particularly good opportunities. That’s just what would happen.

Tournament Arc probably includes a Dale vs. Serena fight at some point.

Serena: “But really, I’d say we ran out of distractions that actually worked back when you tried to break your losing streak by proposing to me–”

Dale: “I nev– it was your losing streak! You were trying to break it by agreeing.

S: “Oh, is that so? Because it’s certainly not the way I remember it.”

D: “… :l”

S: “:D”

*single-stroke battle*

*both fall over*

“This is your younger sister,” the researcher announced cheerfully, waving at the central database server of the Wizard Intelligence Project, resplendent in all its spliced-together glory.

Said server had to admit, despite its present lack of a clearly-defined personality, that considering the past habits of said researcher the apparent teenager had wisely chosen a response of quietly looking in the other direction intensely, the same one that most people had to such nonsensical statements. Which the same researcher had a habit of making quite often.

“Say hello, then,” she continued in the same tone of voice.

The person skulking behind her started briefly as he remembered she was speaking to him. “Ah,” he muttered, before visibly de-stealthing, taking a few steps forward, and waving stiffly. “Hello.”

best way to have fun with basic recording software??

record ordinary speaking -> reverse. instruct the same person to imitate the reverse recording as best as possible, then reverse the result of them doing so.

interesting results.

NaNoWriMo 2008 Participant

official a-plot: Hibernal Solstice (Prismatic Redux). Julien and Mikkau/Michael vs. Sterling, Mona, and IRIS. Saving the world is almost always my basic plot, but at least I have managed to create an increasingly bemusing series of variations on the concept…

official b-plot (well, if I get time/need words): Conjunction. Two-part, one being the Spherian Backstory Arc set about ten to fifteen years before Prismatic and the other being the Spherian Present Arc set at roughly the same time as NaNo 07/Apocynthion (possibly a bit before). Both centered around Miles Vandis, the MRA, and in the backstory arc also Darian and/or Janelle. This will probably be a series of mostly stand-alone stories, with another main arc done possibly in comic form.

alternate b-plot: I have no idea, but it would theoretically center around the first (and possibly second) Trevelyan generations, Morganna (aka the one who blew up the moon, the pre-Julien awesome one) and Adrian respectively. Er, yes. May or may not exist.

a pronoun rundown

August 20, 2008 at 4:16 pm (character-related, fiction) (, , , )

… so I came across some stuff regarding Japanese pronouns and their use in anime as a character tool (at least from the view of the TVTW hivemind). Naturally, I started devising uses for it in the KMV. Also naturally, said uses are completely useless as it’s in English seriously me get a hold on things.

Tobias uses ‘ware’, and most of the time Mikkau does too as a full-on adult (hero worship what). Julien generally uses ‘watashi’ but if she really wants to point out her Superiority will switch straight to ‘ore-sama’ with no provocation whatsoever despite its being seriously unfeminine; Serena doesn’t usually feel any need to prove her Superiority, apparently (although I am absolutely sure she believes in it). Sterling mostly sticks to ‘watashi’ as well, but would use ‘boku’ in a nonformal situation. (I firmly believe that Sterling considers everything a ‘formal situation’, though.) Laura, Miles, and Mona I’m not at all sure about.

Lowen tends towards ‘jibun’ (which is kind of odd, considering his characterization) but will use ‘ore’ if it seems like someone’s doubting him. (…I can’t help but think that he and Julien have somewhat similar personality issues.) Helena uses ‘boku’ in her Obfuscating Cloudcuckoolander personality and ‘watashi’ otherwise, but in discussing plans which involve her she refers to herself in the third person for various psychological reasons. Alexander and Dale mostly use ‘jibun’. Ignatius is unusual (and probably the most distinctive) in that he appears to try to avoid using non-reflexive pronouns for himself–in English, this translates as him either making it obvious from context or using constructions which replace ‘I’ with ‘myself’. Which in Japanese would probably mean he’d use ‘jibun’ too, which makes it probably lower-key strange (at least in a psuedo-anime) as opposed to how it renders in English.

James pluralizes every pronoun he ever uses for himself, because of his rather strange origin -> mindset -> general worldview. Typically he also uses ‘wareware’ but occasionally switches to ‘watashitachi’, which I am not at all sure is spelled correctly as I’ve only heard it.

In conclusion, I have a lot of semi-militaristic characters, Julien speaks in a nonfeminine way, and James is weird.
